June 2020 – by 1Rebel

The man. The legend. It’s none other than Triple Threat and Master Trainer Jono. His warming and joy filled persona makes him a firm favourite in the studio, but we wanted to know what him to 1Rebel in the first place, his role as a Master Trainer, and who he’d have by his side in a zombie apocalypse.

What was your background before 1Rebel?

I grew up on a coastal town in New Zealand, and started dancing at the age of 5, which lead me into a professional career as a contemporary dancer. After touring and performing with some of NZ’s leading dance companies, I made the decision to pack up and move to New York City for a year to pursue my artistic career.

After moving back home, Wellington felt small and quiet which landed the decision to move to London 5 and half years ago.

How did you get your job at 1Rebel and what has your Rebel journey involved?

After a year struggling with my dance career here in London, Daniel (we went to university together and also toured and worked together on several shows back in NZ)  put me in touch with the sales team at 1Rebel back in 2015.

I’ll be honest sales was not my forte but thankfully it led me into the Reshape room where I discovered a new outlook on fitness, and a desire to be a coach. I went and got my qualifications, auditioned and well the rest is history.

My journey has been huge at 1Rebel and I’m so thankful for the growth and mentorship I’ve received in such a short space of time. After two years I become a Master Trainer, Reshape Concept Manager, was voted ClassPass Male Trainer of the Year in 2017, and then took on the role of Head of Fitness.

I took a step back recently to focus on just being a Master Trainer, to be present for the Rebel Army and available for other exciting things that led me to move over to the UK all those years ago.

What does your work as a Master Trainer involve?

The one thing I enjoy the most as a Master Trainer is being involved in the growth of new talent. Being able to mentor and offer what I received starting my fitness journey is beyond rewarding.

Seeing the shift in new trainers to how they unlock their signature, their voice and understanding on our roles as coaches is so exciting. There is so much work and commitment put in before that first session on the schedule that makes me so proud to see how they’ve grown into exceptional, caring and motivational people.

We aren’t here to instruct you what to do, but to coach you on your journey.

What do you love about 1Rebel and the Rebel Army?

I remember my first Reshape vividly (led by the legend Sammy), I remember being incredibly frightened walking into this mysterious dark and loud room. Fitness & lifting was something very daunting to me back then; I’ve always had a lot of insecurities with body image and you would very rarely ever see me in a tank top showing off my arms – now you’ll see me topless on Shock + Shred campaigns!

The beauty of 1Rebel is this is a space where everyone is welcome. I didn’t feel on show, I had my own space to feel strong with no judgment, and it’s what inspired me to allow others to feel the same though the joy of movement, to feel proud in moving and fully welcome here. Knowing I’ve been in a place that has allowed me to work on a lot of my own insecurities and be so supported is what really speaks truth to the community.

The Rebel Army is a community that just keeps on giving. When I say Rebel Army I’m talking all FOH, cleaners, trainers, and of course every single Rebel who turns up to sweat with us.
You can feel the support and encouragement, from all the high fives, the slight competitiveness drive on the run challenges, in the Ride room, when you see the community riding together side to side is something words can’t describe but fills my soul to the brim.

I’m forever grateful to be apart of the Rebel Army.

Okay, now onto the fun stuff…

You’re stranded on a dessert island, basic food, drink and shelter is sorted, what three other items would you want with you and why?

I’m going to go with the fact cleats and a spin bike are already there…so a journal, a polaroid (with unlimited film) and some sunscreen – stay sun smart kids.

In a zombie apocalypse, which other trainer would you choose to help you fight off zombies and why?

Tiago, no question.

What sport would be the funniest to add a mandatory amount of alcohol to?

Cheese Rolling – yes it’s a sport. But if it was mandatory to have a glass or bottle of wine whilst consuming the winning cheese wheel, I wouldn’t complain.

What’s your ultimate hangover cure?

There’s a cure??

I normally wrap myself up in my duvet burrito style, and watch 90’s TV show re runs – whilst hydrating, Coconut water is a life saviour.

If you could have one super power, what would it be?

To fly, so visiting family in NZ didn’t have to take days of travel. And if I get to be undercover like Clark Kent with that hair style, I’m here for it.

If you could make a rule for the day that everyone had to follow, what would it be?

That we had to skip everywhere – imagine it, would be enjoyable and a little silly, just a day full of joy.
