Master Trainer Jess is Rebel’s very own ray of sunshine. Outside the studio she brings an incredibly warming energy, while inside she’ll motivate and inspire you to be the best you can be. Read on to get to know Jess, what her now not-so-secret society is, and the inside scoop on the unwritten rules of 1Rebel.
What was your background before 1Rebel?
Originally from the Midlands I moved to London to pursue a job in performing and had dreams of being an actor or dancer. However the performance world always made me feel extremely insecure, whereas in fitness I was surrounded by seasoned instructors and professionals encouraging me.
Alongside my performance dreams I had taught dance and drama to children and young adults since I was a teenager so becoming a fitness instructor was a pretty natural progression. I started by teaching dance fitness and it evolved from there.
Before starting at 1Rebel I had already been in the industry for around 6 years travelling and presenting fitness locally and globally at various events and expos. I was also the first Master Trainer for global fitness brand PoundFit which gave me so many fun opportunities to educate fitness professionals and learn from others all over the world.
How did you get your job at 1Rebel and what has your Rebel journey involved?
Lots of my friends and colleagues already worked for 1Rebel or had been a part of the initial trainer team, so I was very familiar with the brand. I finally got around to taking a Rumble class and it was love at first punch. I auditioned as soon as there was an opportunity and the rest is history.
I ended up delivering 50 Rumble sessions in my first month! Soon after I qualified in Reshape and then became Rumble concept manager. Like a lot of people in this busy city I realised my plate was a little bit toooo full so I stepped down from that roll a year ago, but being a master trainer means that I can still help and support the Head of Fitness and my team mates. I am also now very honoured and exited to be a part of the Rebel Against Racism team.
What does your work as a Master Trainer involve?
I am not a big fan of hierarchies and I view all 1Rebels trainers as industry leaders and incredible trainers. There is extensive training and support that anyone entering the team goes through so anyone who delivers a session will bring something special.
However, as someone who has been in the industry almost a decade and built up skills along the way, the Master Trainer role allows me to share and support the team and bring those skills to the table. Mentoring and supporting new talent is something I love. Helping to support and guide trainers and then see them killing it is the most rewarding thing in the world.
What do you love about 1Rebel and the Rebel Army?
I love the community! Before working at 1Rebel being a fitness freelancer in London was fun but pretty lonely. It is rare as a freelancer to have a big team of supportive, encouraging and inspiring colleagues but in 1Rebel I do. I always say I am a student first and a teacher second and at 1Rebel I am surrounded by incredible people to learn from – from my fellow trainers, to the front of house and cleaning teams, to the head office and of course to all the legend clients – inspiration is in every corner at 1Rebel!!
Okay, now onto the fun stuff…
What’s the most ridiculous fact you know?
A Koala Bear isn’t actually a bear – it’s a marsupial.
What secret society would you like to start?
I’ve started one – it’s called Ugly Runners 😉
In a zombie apocalypse, which other trainer would you choose to help you fight off zombies and why?
My man Hiitman Luke because, he’d get them with his 27000 combos!
What’s your ultimate hangover cure?
Sleep, Salt and Vinegar Pringles, and texting everyone in my phone just to check we are still okay.
What’s the funniest joke you know?
If you could have one super power, what would it be?
To heal people with cancer.
What are the unwritten rules of 1Rebel?
A strong work ethic. A strong party ethic. An even stronger GIF game, and do not, under any circumstance ‘reply all’.
